tá draíocht timpeall orainn
Happy Monday! I hope you had an amazing weekend full of Paddy’s Day fun! Last week, prior to the video recap, I wrote two posts: “lean into the arts” and “timing is everything.” If you didn’t get a chance to read them, click the links to check them out! St. Patrick’s Day got me thinking about a beautiful idea - "Tá draíocht timpeall orainn.”
“Tá draíocht timpeall orainn” translates loosely to “there is magic all around us.” Do you ever find yourself feeling bitter or resentful? Many people I know go through life feeling unhappy, usually because they’re taking a lot of things for granted or closing themselves off in some way. I recently had a conversation at a party where someone was taken aback by the fact that I think life is beautiful. The person thought for a moment and agreed once I mentioned that I hike a lot. The person with whom I was speaking mentioned they didn’t do enough things like that - getting outside and realizing how small your problems are in comparison to the grandiosity of existence.
Perspective is everything. People who believe that their perspective is the only one that exists or is the most valid probably haven’t spent much time experiencing other countries or other cultures. There’s a whole world waiting outside your comfort zone that is filled to the brim with interesting, enchanting, challenging people, as well as some of the most incredible natural beauty.
Having meaningful interactions and new experiences, meeting new people, helping others, pushing yourself to grow, and ignoring the negativity and noise around you - these are the things that matter most in life. There is magic all around us if only we choose to look at life that way and imagine that things are magical in and of themselves.
Have you ever had a time when you realized you were feeling resentful? Can you pinpoint exactly why? Usually it has to do with some inner issue or insecurity more than the actual situation at hand. The nice thing about those insecurities is that they’re all usually based on something outside of one’s control. Once you let go of the need to control things outside of yourself, you can let go of those insecurities, as well.
Magic, in it’s most basic form, is creating something out of nothing. Our bodies, our relationships, our work ethic, our world view all had to come from somewhere. Once you realize how amazing it is that you were the little sperm that swam faster than all the other little sperms you’ll see how special you were right from the get-go.
So, although “Tá draíocht timpeall orainn” is a great expression to share in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, it’s also a great expression to remind yourself of all the time. Have an amazing Monday and start to your week. Kick some butt, take some names, and do a belated Paddy’s Day jig if you must. Slainté!
